Elegant Plate: Three Centuries of Precious Metals in New York by Deborah Dependahl Waters,
Although precious metals have been part of the lives of New Yorkers since the city's founding, until now comparatively little has been written about them. These two volumes examine the precious metals trades and usage of precious metals artifacts since the third quarter of the 17th century, through the excellent collection at the Museum of the City of New York that contains more than 1400 objects of silver and other precious metals, including hollowware, flatware, and jewelry made, sold, or owned in New York. The history of these artifacts and their makers is told through essays and catalog entries, as well as in biographies of craftsmen, designers, and retail firms. Entries include photographs of the objects and their marks, with measurements, description, references, accession information, and history. The featured essays are "Taste, Trade, and Industry: Making and Marketing New York Silver", "Life as a Silversmith in New York City before 1750", and "Gratitude and Glory: Silver and Gold Presentation Pieces in New York City History".

Auction catalog - An auction catalog is a catalog that lists items to be sold at an auction. Auction catalogs for rare and expensive items, such as art, jewelry, postage stamps, and antique furniture, are of interest in and of themselves, for they will frequently include detailed descriptions of the items, their provenance, historical significance, photographs, and so forth.

Water torch - A water torch, sometimes called a water welder, is a device that produces the high-temperature flame required for the precision welding, brazing, and cutting of metals typically employed in the making of jewelry. It operates by using DC electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen, which are then burned at the torch head.

Persian weave - Persian weave is a method of weave used in jewelry and other art forms. When used for making chains, the Persian weave makes a dense chain with a fascinating ring pattern.

Alpaca silver - Alpaca silver, also called nickel silver, is an alloy of copper, nickel, zinc, and iron which does not rust or tarnish. It is often used in jewelry making due to its "almost silver" appearance and relatively low cost.
